Purging your closet can be a daunting task, but it feels so good after you’ve gone through the process. These 5 questions will help you dive into how your clothes make you feel so you are left with a wardrobe you love. I believe having a closet full of clothes that make you feel good is an important part of starting your day on the right foot. There is nothing worse than getting dressed in the morning and ending up frustrated and feeling like crap because nothing quite works. You feel defeated so you grab your go to leggings and top and carry on with your day. Your day does not need to start like this.
Love your wardrobe, have a closet full of clothes that make you feel good
I found myself in this same rut. Finding no enjoyment in getting ready in the morning, and reaching for some comfy leggings and cozy top because it was easy. This blah feeling would carry throughout my day and I had enough. I deserve better than that. You deserve better than that.
That’s when I decided a change needed to be made. We should start our days with our best foot forward, and part of this is to get ready and put on clothes that make us feel great. When we feel good in the clothes we wear it goes a long way. It’s like putting on your favourite lipstick or your favourite hot shoes. It changes the way you walk. It boosts your confidence and allows us to see doors open that we may have not otherwise seen.
That’s why I’ve created this Love Yourself, Love Your Wardrobe blog series. Over the coming months, I will give you tips for purging your closet, having a successful shopping trip, shopping online, and creating a capsule wardrobe. You deserve to start your day feeling good about yourself, and I am here to help you get there ❤️️ It can be a daunting task at first, but it is so worth it. After you’ve gone through the process you will start each day feeling good in the clothes you wear, which will only help you to conquer your day and continue to love yourself and provide for your family.
Try on everything
When purging your closet it’s really important to try on everything. Yes it can be daunting, yes it takes time, but it is completely necessary to create a wardrobe you love and that makes you feel good. I recommend wearing black leggings and a black tank/tshirt when trying everything on. That way you get more of a feel for how a top or bottoms look as part of an outfit, rather than having everything mismatched.
As you go through trying on every item you need to ask yourself the first 3 questions. Be honest with yourself and put your focus on how the clothes make you feel. Does it feel nice and cozy? Does it make you want to twirl around? Does it show off your favourite asset? Do you feel good when you look in the mirror? Focus on how the clothes make you feel and get rid of the rest. After you’ve gone through all of your items you can do some extra closet purging by asking yourself the last 2 questions.
While doing this process you can create a few piles: keep, maybes (you’ll return to this pile at the end), donate, and garbage. Try to donate as much as you can and only throw out items that are damaged or have become very worn.
Questions to ask yourself when purging your closet
Does it fit?
Does this item fit me right now? It takes a simple yes or no.
Many of us hold on to items in hopes of it one day fitting again. Before we know it years go by with it sitting in our closets leaving us wishing it would fit. We might try it on the following year when it’s in season again only to see the buttons still won’t do up. Stop doing this to yourself. Get rid of everything that does not fit you right now, with one exception. If you’re pregnant store clothes that once fit and give yourself up to 1 year to fit again. If they don’t fit after 1 year toss them out.
If you really struggle with getting rid of clothes you hope to fit again, think about it this way. If/when you end up achieving your goal weight you deserve a shopping trip to get new clothes that fit. There’s no need to hold onto things when we aren’t there. Get rid of them and reward yourself when it’s time.

Is it in good condition?
Do you have that shirt you really love, but it happens to be coming apart at the seams, or has a bunch of tiny holes where your belt buckle is? It’s time to let it go. Only keep clothing that is in good condition. If you will actually commit to fixing clothing you can create a pile of clothing that needs buttons reattached, hemmed, etc., but only do this if you’re actually going to take the time to repair them.
Does it make me feel good when I wear it?
This is the most important question of all. Does it make you feel good when you wear it? If it makes you feel self conscious, or if you’re constantly having to fix a strap or pull something up, then it’s time to let it go. You want to focus on a wardrobe that makes you feel good to set the tone for the day. Each outfit should make you smile. It should be comfortable and flattering. If you feel meh, or aren’t quite sure about it, let it go.
If you struggle with letting pieces go you can put them in a seperate pile and try them all on again after you’ve gone through everything. After you see all of the great things you’re keeping and how they make you feel you may feel better about tossing the meh pieces.
Do I have multiples of the same item?
This is for all of the shopaholics/former shopaholics like me. Unless you need to dress a certain way for work, you do not need 3 black tops with 3/4 sleeves, I was totally guilty of that! Get rid of your multiples and chose the one that you love most. Maybe it has the best details, or fits you just right.
Can I make at least 3 outfits with this?
You should be able to make at least 3 outfits with any 1 piece in your closet. If you’re holding onto something for that 1 time you might wear it, get rid of it.
