I have always been someone who has kept my hair long and healthy even though I dyed it bright red every single month. Just under a year ago I decided to go back to my natural hair colour because the upkeep became ridiculous after dyeing my hair every month for almost 10 years. When the stylist tried to dye it back towards my natural colour it was completely fried and orange and yellow! I was devastated and honestly thought I was going to have to chop all of my hair off because it was so terribly damaged. Luckily a friend referred me to Willow from Kharma Design Studio here in Victoria BC. She saved my hair and showed me the best hair mask ever!

I’ve had requests to do a hair care blog post, and given all of my trials and tribulations I thought it would be nice to share with you the tricks I swear by to keep my hair nice and healthy. So here you have 5 tips to keep your hair healthy.

Weekly Hair Masks

Doing weekly hair masks will repair any damage you may have done over the week and keep your hair looking nice and healthy. You can use any trusted hair mask, but Olaplex is the one that saved my fried hair most. It’s seriously magical how well this product works. As I said, I thought I was going to have to cut all of my hair off it was so fried, within just a few treatments my hair actually felt semi-soft, and 6 months later in conjunction with my other tips my hair is back where it was before it was destroyed.

You could also try the more natural route and make your own essential oil hair mask using rosemary, cedarwood, and clary sage essential oils.

Use Colder Water in the Shower

I know, I know, cold water?! Who wants to have a cold water shower?! Not me! But trust me, it really helps your hair. Hot water damages your hair, weakens the roots, and can make it dull and breakable. My trick is to turn the dial down slightly to luke warm when I am rinsing my hair in the shower, then at the very end I do a very quick cold blast on my hair which helps perk you up in the morning. The luke warm water keeps the cuticle open allowing the hair to absorb as much conditioner as possible while keeping the temperature tolerable while you’re in the shower. The cold blast at the end seals the cuticle and leaves your hair shiny and prevents frizz.

Invest in Quality Hair Tools

I’ve always been someone who was on a tighter budget and would always look for a really good deal when purchasing hair tools. That is, until I discovered HSI Professional and realized the difference good quality hair tools make.  The heat is generally more consistent using better materials so you don’t need to heat it for as long and your hair is less damaged. I’ve been using hair tools more often than ever before and my hair is just as healthy as it used to be before it was fried. It is important to also consider the styling products you use when heat styling your hair.

Use Thermal Protector Products

HSI Professional also showed me how to use the right products properly while styling your hair. The formula they taught me is to style thermal protectant spray all over your hair. Then use some sort of hair oil, I like HSI’s argan oil, and spread a small dime sized amount from the middle of your hair down to the ends. Style your hair as you normally would. Then use the same small amount of hair oil and reapply it from the middle of your hair down to the ends, with most of the product going on the ends. Voila! That is the secret formula for keeping your hair in good condition while using heated styling tools!

Hair Vitamins

Hair vitamins also help to keep your hair in good condition. The vitamins normally contain biotin, collagen and other good for you nutrients and minerals. Added benefit – they help your nails too! Currently I use the It Works Hair, Skin, Nails vitamins, but there are many others out there in the market.
