Store bought iced tea can have sooooo much added sugar and preservatives. Sometimes it can have even more sugar than pop #ApparentlyNotAHealthyOption! That’s why I’ve started making homemade iced tea. If I’m not drinking copious amounts of water or infused water, I’m drinking homemade iced tea. Not only is it so much better for you, but it’s fun to try out different combinations of tea and infused simple syrup. Make sure to scroll to the bottom for homemade iced tea tips!

Homemade Iced Tea Recipe
Ingredients
- Tea of your choice
- Water
- Simple syrup (peppermint simple syrup recipe)
Directions
- Scoop loose leaf tea into water (2 tsp per cup of water).
- Let steep in fridge for at least 4 hours.
- Strain tea leaves out of iced tea.
- Add simple syrup to taste. I like to add 1/2 tbsp per cup of water.
Tips
- Use higher quality tea for better taste. I find I get a much tastier tea when I use loose leaf tea compared to Tetley bagged tea.
- Use twice the recommended amount of tea per cup of water. Usually it’s recommended to use 1 tsp, but if it recommends more or less, double that amount.
- You will not get a bitter taste if you leave the tea leaves in for longer. Feel free to let it steep overnight.
- Use an infused simple syrup for a tastier homemade iced tea. Try my peppermint simple syrup recipe.
- Play with different tea and infused simple syrup recipes.
- Make a large batch and store in the fridge to drink throughout the day.
- Spruce up with ice cubes that have berries or herbs frozen in them.
- Garnish with fruits or herbs.
There ya have it, your go to recipe for a perfect glass of homemade iced tea. Fair enough, this might not be perfect for you, but I find it hits the perfect balance of flavour and sweetness without getting too bitter. I’ve tried making a small amount of warm tea, mixing in sugar, then adding cold water and ice, but it just doesn’t cut it for me. I’d love to hear what your favourite kind of iced tea or healthy summer drink is. Please leave me a comment below.
